West Highland Way – Day 4
Tyndrum to the Devil’s Staircase (via Rannoch Moor)
Day 4 on the West Highland Way is often remembered as one of the most dramatic and rewarding days of the entire route. Wide open landscapes, big skies, and the steady climb up the legendary Devil’s Staircase make this stage feel like a true Highland adventure.
While the classic Day 4 runs from Inveroran to Kinlochleven, many walkers refer to this section broadly as Tyndrum to the Devil’s Staircase, as it marks the emotional and physical high point of the journey.
Distance & Elevation:
Option 1 – Classic Day 4 (Most Common)
📍 Inveroran to Kinlochleven (via Devil’s Staircase)
Distance: ~22 km / 14 miles
Total Ascent: ~750–800 m
Time: 6–8 hours depending on weather and pace
Option 2 – Longer Day (Starting from Tyndrum)
📍 Tyndrum to Kinlochleven
Distance: ~40 km / 25 miles
Total Ascent: ~1,000 m
⚠️ Only recommended for very strong, experienced walkers
Route Highlights:
🌿 Rannoch Moor
The day begins with one of the most atmospheric stretches of the entire West Highland Way. Rannoch Moor feels wild, remote, and endlessly vast. This ancient landscape of peat bogs, lochans, and distant mountains sets the tone for what’s to come.
🏔️ The Devil’s Staircase
Despite its intimidating name, the Devil’s Staircase is a steady, well-engineered climb, not a scramble. The ascent rises gradually from Altnafeadh to the highest point on the West Highland Way.
At the top, you’re rewarded with breathtaking views over Glen Coe—on a clear day, this is one of the most memorable viewpoints of the entire trail.
The descent into Kinlochleven is long and knee-testing, but the scenery helps distract from the fatigue.
Tips for Day 4 Walkers
✔️ Start early – Weather can change fast, especially on Rannoch Moor
✔️ Waterproofs are essential – This section is very exposed
✔️ Trekking poles help – Particularly useful on the long descent
✔️ Bring enough food & water – Limited services until Kinlochleven
✔️ Don’t fear the Devil’s Staircase – It’s tough, but manageable and well worth it
Final Thoughts:
Day 4 is where the West Highland Way truly feels epic. The isolation of Rannoch Moor followed by the iconic Devil’s Staircase makes this stage both physically demanding and deeply rewarding. It’s a day that stays with you long after the blisters fade.
If you get a clear day—take your time, look back often, and enjoy every step.
