Mapping Language Variation and Dialects through Twitter

American English includes a range of dialects, but mapping where these dialects are and how they interact has traditionally been a difficult and time-consuming task. Gabriel Doyle uses people's writing on social media to automatically build maps of how usage varies across the country. Thanks to the massive amount of available data, the resulting maps correlate well with traditional methods and allow us to build more complete maps, and far more quickly. Recorded on 11/25/2013.
