The journey from Bottrop via Essen on the A40 to Essen-Kray is a typical drive on German motorways, bringing a combination of city traffic and fast motorway driving.

Start in Bottrop:
Bottrop is a quiet town in North Rhine-Westphalia, famous for its mining past. Leaving Bottrop, you drive through a town with typical residential areas, here and there shops and parks. Traffic is mostly smooth on the streets, but you may encounter traffic lights and minor traffic jams, especially during rush hour.

Arriving in Essen:
As you approach Essen, the traffic starts to increase. Essen is a large city with a rich industrial history and a bustling centre. Here you will encounter more intersections, more roads and more cars. Traffic signs lead you towards the A40 motorway.

Entrance to the A40:
Once you get onto the A40, you'll notice the difference in speed. The A40 is one of the main traffic arteries in the Ruhr area, often referred to as the "Ruhrschleichweg" because of the frequent traffic jams. If you're lucky, traffic is smooth and you can drive at close to the speed limit. Otherwise, be prepared for traffic jams, especially around Essen.

Drive along the A40:
The A40 passes through the central part of the Ruhr area, the industrial heart of Germany. Around you, views of industrial estates, modern office buildings and residential areas alternate. Exit to Essen-Kray:

After leaving the motorway, you'll find yourself in a neighbourhood that has a more pleasant and peaceful atmosphere compared to the hustle and bustle of the main motorway.
