While fans await updates on Tom Holland's next big-screen adventure as Spider-Man, a different incarnation of the web-slinger is preparing to swing into action on the small screen. Nicolas Cage is set to star in "Spider-Noir," an upcoming TV series that will air on MGM+ and be available to Prime Video subscribers. The show will feature a unique take on the beloved superhero: an aging private detective navigating the gritty streets of 1930s New York City. And every hero needs a formidable foe, and the casting for the series’ main antagonist has been revealed to be nothing short of brilliant.
As reported by Variety, Brendan Gleeson is believed to have joined the cast as Spider-Noir’s primary adversary. While the character’s identity hasn’t been officially disclosed, there were rumors in July that Cage’s Spider-Man would be investigating a murder tied to Silvermane, also known as Silvio Manfredi, the notorious head of the Maggia crime family, and femme fatale Yuri Watanabe, who later becomes Wraith in the comics. Given these details, it’s quite possible that Gleeson will take on the role of Silvermane. Whether or not that’s true, Gleeson’s addition is a remarkable win for the series.
This marks Gleeson's second appearance in a comic book-related project, following his role in "Joker: Folie à Deux," set for release in a few weeks. Gleeson is best known for his portrayal of Mad-Eye Moody in the "Harry Potter" franchise and as Bill Hodges in the television adaptation of Stephen King’s "Mr. Mercedes." Most recently, he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the 2022 film "The Banshees of Inisherin."
In addition to Gleeson and Cage, who previously voiced Spider-Man Noir in 2018’s "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," the series' cast includes Lamorne Morris as journalist Robbie Robertson, Li Jun Li, rumored to be playing a nightclub singer (possibly Yuri Watanabe), and Abraham Popoola, reportedly portraying a World War I veteran looking for new opportunities. The show is helmed by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who are executive producing alongside Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Amy Pascal, known for their work on "Into the Spider-Verse."
Filming for "Spider-Noir" began in Los Angeles last month, but no official release date has been announced. As fans look forward to this series, they also anticipate "Spider-Man 4" and "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse," both of which remain without confirmed release dates. Another planned Spider-Man spinoff, "Silk: Spider Society," was unfortunately scrapped earlier this year.
