[TIMELESS] - Prof. Singingeagle laments that students aren’t getting the IRONY and SATIRE of an old 1980s poem, “The Pow-Wow” by an anonymous Chumash author. Singingeagle argues that the poet is tapping into an old European literary tradition, turning a devastating cultural weapon against the colonizers themselves. Singingeagle explains that the poet was clearly angry when she wrote this satirical piece. But it’s also the anger of wit and sarcasm.
Like writers such as John Dryden, Alexander Pope, and Jonathan Swift, our anonymous author adopts a persona, a “mask” or false voice, pretending to be non-Native in order to expose the arrogance, ignorance, and cruelty of tourists who descend on Native traditional gatherings expecting to be entertained.
