La Pietra: Hawaii School for Girls participated in the first round of the 2016 English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition on Jan. 19 with a three-student monologue contest.
The winner for the second time, sophomore Lanihuli Gilbert, will compete at the state contest on Feb. 20 at Punahou. At the state contest each student will also have to perform a sonnet.
The winner of the state contest will be sent to Lincoln Center in New York City on May 2 for the national finals.
Gilbert won for her interpretation of Richard in "Richard II."
Here are the performances in the order they appear in the video:
Lanihuli Gilbert (playing Richard in Act 3, Scene 2 of "Richard II.")
Ellen Hughes (playing Anne in Act 1, Scene 2 of "Richard III.")
Pumehana Uslan (playing Phoebe in Act 3, Scene 5 of "As You Like It.")
Uslan was runner-up.
Some 20,000 students in nearly 60 English Speaking Union branch communities will participate this year in Shakespeare contests.
Hawaii students have won the nationals twice.
