The sixth nerve is the abducens nerve. This nerve is located in the brainstem at the junction of the pons and the medulla and it connects to our eyes. In fact, this is a somatic efferent nerve which its function is to innervate the lateral rectus muscle, which is responsible for outward gaze. Its damage in the peripheral part may cause double vision, also called diplopia. Damages in the pons around to this nerve may cause ipsilateral facial palsy, lateral rectus palsy or contralateral hemiparesis.
