The festival usually falls twice a year—in Chaitra (March–April) and Sharad (September–October). However, Sharad Navratri is the most widely celebrated. It begins with Kalash Sthapana or Ghatasthapana, marking the invocation of divine energy, and concludes with Vijayadashami or Dussehra, which symbolizes the victory of good over evil, commemorating Goddess Durga’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura and Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana.

Rituals during Navratri include fasting, reciting scriptures, and performing daily prayers. Many devotees observe special diets, abstaining from grains and consuming fruits, milk, and specific fasting foods. Evenings are marked with cultural events like Garba and Dandiya Raas, traditional dances especially popular in Gujarat and Maharashtra, bringing communities together in joy and devotion.

Each of the nine days is also associated with a specific color, and devotees wear clothes of that color to honor the goddess of the day. Beyond worship, Navratri is a time for self-discipline, purification, and spiritual upliftment. It encourages devotees to conquer inner negativities, just as the goddess destroyed evil forces.
