In this walking tour we explore Katholiko Gorge, located at the northern tip of the Akrotiri Peninsula near Chania, Crete — a place where nature, history, and mysticism meet.

The gorge itself is relatively short (about 1 kilometer), but the journey is more demanding than many guidebooks suggest.

Starting at Gouverneto Monastery, a stone-paved path descends steeply along dramatic cliffs with views toward the sea. Along the way you pass the Cave of Panagia and eventually reach the abandoned Monastery of Katholiko, built dramatically into the rock face and connected to the opposite cliff by a striking single-arched stone bridge.

From there, the trail continues toward a small rocky cove at the sea.

The monastery ruins and the nearby cave of Saint John the Hermit can be explored, but proper footwear is essential. One cave near the path extends about 60 meters inside — bringing a torch or phone light is highly recommended.

⚠ Important warning for visitors:

Although often described as an “easy walk,” this route is not easy.

If you arrive by bus, you may need to walk nearly 4 km along a mountain road before even reaching Gouverneto Monastery.

From there, the descent into the gorge is steep and rocky.

The full round trip (including the beach) can take around 4 hours.

There are no clear places to buy water along the route.

This walk is not recommended for small children, elderly visitors, or anyone without good physical condition.

Despite the effort, Katholiko Gorge remains one of Crete’s most atmospheric hidden places — quiet, rugged, and spiritually layered.
