In 2020, when he first ran for a second term, Donald Trump was lauded by, among others, our friend Sister Deirdre “Dede” Byrne as the “most pro-life President in history.” The depiction was hardly an exaggeration. Both Trump’s Supreme Court picks and his unwinding of the pro-abortion rules and regulations issued by his predecessor’s federal bureaucracy were, indeed, unprecedented.
But the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade and later a Mississippi Supreme Court ruling, holding that frozen embryos were protected as “children” under Mississippi state law, brought back into sharp relief once again the unavoidable issue under our Constitution of when life begins and how that life must be protected.
Caught off guard, as a candidate President elect Trump stumbled badly on the issue, vowing to safeguard IVF. But was he aware that the most commonly utilized IVF process results in multiple frozen embryos that are, or likely will be, discarded? Trump’s position disheartened his pro-life supporters. Since, he to some extent, has walked back his statement. But, it seems obvious, and like many of us, candidate Trump was not fully aware of the moral significance of what he was saying.
As faithful Catholics, and for the sake of our children and grandchildren, we dare not make the same mistake.
