Thanks to Andrew McCaslin of @KaldisCoffeeRoastingCo for working through coffee in cocktails with me.
Espresso Martini (08:55)
2 oz vodka
1 oz espresso
3/4 oz simple syrup
Lemon twist garnish
Riff: reduce the simple syrup to 1/2 oz and add a 1/2 oz of coffee liqueur (e.g. Tia Maria, Mr. Black Coffee, Kahlua, etc)
Add the first three ingredients to the shaker with ice and shake hard for 10 seconds to emulsify the espresso. Strain into a chilled coupe glass and express a lemon peel over the top.
Carajillo (23:30)
2 oz Licor 43
2 oz Espresso
Riff: reduce Licor 43 to 1.5 oz and add a 1/2 oz of brandy
Shake the ingredients and strain them into an ice-filled rocks glass.
Early Bird (33:20): a Jungle Bird riff borrowed from the @SubtleTiki Instagram channel
1 oz Jamaican rum (e.g. Appleton's Estate or Plantation Xamayca)
1 oz pineapple juice
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/2 oz coffee-infused Campari*
1/4 oz coffee liqueur
1/4 - 1/2 oz simple syrup
Shake all the ingredients over ice and strain over a large cube (if you have one).
*If you have time, infuse a teaspoon or two of whole beans in 4 oz of Campari for ~8 hours. For a faster infusion, I used ground coffee. Whole beans will also save you from having to strain out the grounds.
