"Dungeon Explorer" is an action RPG developed by Hudson Soft and Westone and published by Sega in 1995 for the Sega Mega CD.
Even though it bears the same name, it must not be confused with the homonymous title for the PC Engine/Turbografx-16, which however is the first installment of the same series.
Just like the previous entries in the franchise, Dungeon Explorer is a top down dungeon crawling action RPG that bears a strong resemblance to the much more famous Gauntlet.
The game is characterized by rather basic visuals and a high difficulty level, as well as a decent CD-quality soundtrack.
It can be played by 4 players simultaneously, and it features a proper save system on the console's memory, that allows you to keep the experience points previously gained by your character.
After Dungeon Explorer on the Sega CD, the series saw the release of only two other installments.
"Crystal Beans: From Dungeon Explorer", which is a Super Famicom port of "Dungeon Explorer 2", was published in 1995,
while the last entry in the series, "Dungeon Explorer: Warriors of Ancient Arts", came out in 2007 on PSP and Nintendo DS.
Sadly, the Sega CD title was never rereleased in digital form, so the only legit way you can play it is on the original hardware.
