Following King Charles III’s accession to the throne, teacher/children’s author, Banji Alexander, composed ‘New King’ to mark the historic moment. Kings and Queens have been a part of many cultures from around the world. Written from a child’s perspective, ‘New King’ explores what one would do if they suddenly became king.
‘New King’ is a fun song with a catchy pop hook, a hip hop groove and funk bass line, blended with string and horn sections reminiscent of 70s disco/soul. Banji Alexander’s surprisingly soulful vocal mixed with the youthful and playful voices of his 'class' make for an infectiously fun record, which can be a talking point to discuss the history of monarchy, its relevance today, and kings and queens from around the globe.
