10 December 2016. What was supposed to be a fun dive at a pristine reef called "Barracuda Point" turned out to be anything but fun.
We noticed a lack of fish as soon as we jumped off the boat, which we thought was unusual as this is supposed to be one of the best dive sites in Bunaken. It was only after we had descended a little deeper that the problem became apparent. Hundreds of fish of all kinds were scattered across the sea floor, freshly killed. And the destruction of the coral reef in the vicinity made it clear how.
Blast fishing is common in SE Asia, where fishermen use homemade explosives to bomb the reefs. It is an effective way of killing a lot of fish with minimal effort, but it destroys everything in the area and kills the reef, meaning it can no longer support life.
It is illegal, but difficult to enforce in these remote areas.
