Hollywood is mourning the loss of actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his iconic role as Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek. The actor has died at the age of 48 after a courageous battle with stage three bowel cancer, his family confirmed on February 11, 2026.
Van Der Beek, who rose to fame in the late 1990s, became a cultural touchstone for a generation through Dawson’s Creek (1998–2003). He also starred in Varsity Blues, Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, and most recently appeared in Prime Video’s Overcompensating.
Diagnosed in late 2023, Van Der Beek later used his platform to advocate for cancer awareness and early screenings, saying he hoped his story could help save lives.
He is survived by his wife Kimberly and their six children.
