The MOST Underrated Artform - Hanging Dioramas (and how to make them)

Описание: In this video, I demonstrate the construction process of a hanging diorama that I made a few years ago, which depicts a derelict industrial brick wall, as well as some rusty pipes and other utility devices, and two windows which have been boarded up by wooden planks. This build was my first return to the hanging diorama artform after some time away from it, and the reference image which this piece came from seemed, to me, to be a good opportunity to ease back into things. There was nothing too crazy or complicated, it was modest in size, the colors were all standard earth tones, and (perhaps most importantly) the dilapidated subject matter gave me ample opportunity to hide any mistakes with rust, grime, cosmetic damage, and weathering. It was a chance to do some simple things really well, like a fancy grilled cheese. I think the hanging diorama is hugely underrated as an artform. It's a great way to display these elements which are so often resigned to the background of more narrative artworks (say stop motion animation films, or dioramas for action figure display, or historical recreations). These elements are similarly resigned to the background of our daily lives, objects of pure utility that punctuate our every experience. The hanging diorama is a great chance to put these elements in the spotlight, so to speak. To let them tell their story, and have their chance as subjects worthy of genuine artistic appreciation, on the same tier as ancient myths and religious iconography. Aesthetically speaking, these subjects shape our lives, and have served as backdrops to the full spectrum of human emotion, and I think it's only fair that we turn around once in a while and witness them the way they've witnessed us. Rusty pipes, rough and weathered wood, chipped paint, all these things have such a profound story to tell, and the hanging diorama can help them tell it. They are also just very easy to display compared to typical dioramas.
