I pull a large trident maple from it's pot, reduce and correct the roots on the tree, then place it into a slightly smaller pot. This procedure not only helps to increase the vigor of the tree, but it also helps to create better "Bonsai Roots". That is, a more fibrous and compact root ball. This procedure also aids in branching of the tree. The new pot is about 2'' smaller in diameter than the old pot. In the end, the tree when placed into a bonsai pot will be able to go into about a 10'' pot at the smallest. A 13' diam. and 5'' deep pot is what I will go for.
At the end of the video, I show some of the "Stratified and Germinating" trident maple seeds that I placed into the chiller of the fridge back in Nov 2022 after soaking and treating them with fungicide.
Note: Stratified means temperature treating. This is for setting and then breaking the dormant state of the seed. Part of the process is to keep the seeds from drying as well as providing moisture to the seed germ.
Scarified means to damage the outer shell of the seed. This allows moisture to penetrate the seed quicker/easier. This helps the seed to germinate; (Germ+ emanate = Seedling) You thought I would say ''=germinate''... and so I did!
These are two different processes used to gain the same result for seeds... To create a plant!
