Testing 6½x8½ inch Whole Plate film holders and backs for the Rittreck View 5x7 large format analog camera, two different 6½x8½ (Whole Plate) backs and Shanghai GP3 100 film. Lenses used are an original single-coated Fujinon W 180mm f5.6 lens and multi-coated Fujinon NW 300mm f5.6 lens.
Whole Plate (6½x8½ inches) is an old format from the glass plate days of photography. These "plate" formats were replaced by 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10 in the early 20th century everywhere except for Japan, where whole (and half) plate sized film remained a popular format for studio and street portrait photographers up until the late 1960s or early 1970s.
This video features an old "plate" back and wooden bookform holders originally designed for glass negatives, fitted with adaptors for sheet film. This back has no maker's mark but was most likely made by either Okuhara or Tachihara (Tachihara made a lot of equipment for Rittreck and other manufacturers under their Hope brand). There was no standard for wooden plate holders so when purchasing a back make sure it comes with holders that correctly fit.
This back and holders are probably 75 to 100 years old and probably have light leaks. I'm testing them with (relatively cheap) film to determine which holders are leaking in preparation for some work with J.Lane glass plate negatives, which are around $35 each. I don't want to waste them with leaky holders.
