At present, Indian steel industries emit 242 million tons of CO2, which is expected to grow to more than three times (837 million tons) in the next three decades due to the use of coal. Not only India but global CO2 emission data suggests that steel industries account for almost 5-7% of total emissions worldwide due to coal utilization. Thus, woody biomass and agro residue-derived bio-coal can partially replace coal to achieve a partially closed carbon cycle and mitigate steel industry CO2 emissions by 18-40%. Other major coal alternatives, such as natural gas, biodiesel, ethanol, and polyethylene, fail to maintain the adiabatic flame temperature because of insufficient heat supply. Therefore, the present study demonstrates a low-cost technology to produce bio-coal and bio-coke from agro residue and woody biomass for potential application in steel industries. The higher heating value of bio-coal (30-32 MJ/Kg) is almost in the coal heating range (30-32 MJ/Kg) used in the steel industries, which makes it the most suited alternative feedstock. Moreover, the same setup can produce liquid from waste plastic materials and a mixture of concentrated metals from e-waste.
