Rayman Origins is a platform game simultaneously playable by up to four local players, who can join or leave the game at any time. Players can choose to control either Rayman, Globox or two Teensies, with additional costumes available as the game progresses.
The story follows Rayman plus his friend Globox and two teensies, one with green clothes and the other with black clothes, who as they fight against the Darktoons, psychlops and other evil creatures that infected Rayman's homeland.
Players travel through each level, fighting enemies and rescuing Electoons. As the game progresses, players gain new skills, such as running through walls, sliding in the air after the jump and shrinking in size to allow them to reach new areas. In certain segments, players mount a mosquito, where players can shoot at enemies or suck and expel them. If a character is hit by an enemy or obstacle, it will dilate until another player can bring him back into the game, hitting him, similar to New Super Mario Bros. Wii, although players can collect hearts that will protect them. However, if all players are dilated simultaneously, or if a character is hit during the game for one player, the game returns to the last checkpoint. Throughout each level, players can collect golden Lums, and when a character collects a "King" Lum temporarily doubles the value of the Lums.
