Are you thinking of selling or buying at an auction? Perhaps, you are but on the other hand, not very sure on how to go about it. At first, it may seem like a hard task, but in fact it is not. NE Restaurant Auctions has the time, place and date of each action. They have been held in monasteries and temples, coffeehouses and taverns, educational institutions and barns too. So how does a live auction work?
Firstly, when you visit the sales scene, you as the bidder must acquire a bidder card or form from the auction cashier, which you will then fill up. These cards are required to make a bid on items. In many cases, a refundable cash deposit is needed just before the bidder card is distributed. However, before you fill up the card or form, you must first look around and view all the items present. This helps you prepare psychologically for what you will bid for and budget for your cash.
At the beginning of the sale, the auctioneer announces the sales terms for all the bidders to get to know their responsibilities in the process. When you as the bidder are ready to make your bid on a certain item or lot, you will simply raise your hand or your bidder card. The auctioneer will then acknowledge your bid using a nod or a call. He or she will then assist you in spotting bids while holding up the merchandise. This is for all bidders to see the lot or item for bid and mark the item with your number once it is sold.
Once the bid is won, the ringman informs the clerk what you the bidder had paid for the item and your bidder number. The data is later recorded and passed on to the cashier who later on tabulates your purchases for check out from sales. You will either pay by cash or you can use a cashier's check. In many cases, it is advisable for the bidder, which is you, to remove the property from the auction scene immediately after sales.
Finally, there are some auction industry terms, which you should also know and help you understand your responsibilities as a bidder.
Absolute Auction: This term signifies that all items in the live auction should be sold to the highest bidder, despite the bid. There is usually no minimum or reserve on the bid item.
Auction with Reserve: All or some items in the auction include a minimum bid, which should be reached by the bidder just before the ringman can sell them. This kind of sale is normally reserved mostly for possessions with a much higher value like, commercial estate properties or homes.
In general, the auctioneer normally has the final word in all bidding locations. If the ringman handled your bid and then the auctioneer did not have a view, the item is actually sold as he or she directs. All the above is the full process on how a live auction works.
