Perched on the clifftops of South Ronaldsay, the Hoxa Head batteries are
among the most impressive and atmospheric remains of Orkney's wartime
history. They were built to guard the Sound of Hoxa, the main southern entrance
to the Scapa Flow naval anchorage.
The site is actually a complex of two main batteries spanning both World Wars:
