The Supreme Court has taken serious note of the alarming rise in stray dog attacks across India.
A bench led by Justice Vikram Nath has ordered all States and Union Territories to identify educational and health institutions within two weeks and ensure these premises are fenced to prevent the entry of stray dogs.
The Court also ruled that dogs picked up from such areas must not be released back there. Institutions must appoint a nodal officer for maintenance, and local bodies must inspect every three months.
Expressing concern over India’s image being “shown down” due to repeated dog bite incidents, the Court noted that nearly 20,000 cases occur daily, including 2,000 in Delhi alone.
