Sunder Nursery is a large heritage park and botanical garden in Nizamuddin, New Delhi, India, right next to the famous Humayun’s Tomb UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spread over about 90 acres, it was originally known as Azim Bagh from the Mughal period and later became a British-era plant nursery. After extensive restoration and landscape work, it reopened as a public heritage park in 2018.
🏛️ History & Heritage
The park contains multiple historic Mughal-era monuments; at least six are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage sites as part of the Humayun’s Tomb complex.
Designed along a central axial spine, the landscape combines formal Mughal-style gardens with natural habitats, water features, ponds, and lakes.
The Nursery has over 300 types of trees, making it one of Delhi’s first arboretums.
A biodiversity or micro-habitat zone showcases plants from Delhi’s original landscapes — ridge, riverine, marshy areas — and attracts many birds and butterflies.
