How to say March in British English

The third month of the year, after February and before April.
We can learn a lot from this word as it contains a long vowel, silent R and an unusual consonant cluster at the end.

So we have just one syllable, which starts with the consonant letter M and then explodes into the long vowel /a:/, which we make by keeping the
tongue in the centre of the mouth, lips relaxed and the jaw opens a lot. It's the same sound a doctor asks you to make when they want to examine your throat.

This word contains a letter R but in most British accents we only pronounce the R when it's followed by a vowel sound, for instance in words like Red, or Spring. In American English they will pronounce the R in this word, but in Brit English it is silent.

The final sound at the end is the /ch/ consonant cluster as we see in words like church. It can sometimes be spelt with a /tch/ but it is the same sound. To make this sound start with the lips rounded as if you are going in for a kiss, the tongue is flat and very close to the roof of the mouth, one strong puff of air and then it stops by touching the roof of your mouth with the tip of the tongue.

So together we have m ah ch

Lets compare March to other similar words like match, such as a football match or something you use to create a fire. The difference between these two words is just the letter a. In March we use a long vowel sound and in Match a short vowel /a/ as we use in words like Cat.
