Our Avian Care Specialists, here at the Alaska Raptor Center, have hiked mountains, kayaked lakes and climbed trees in order to rescue a patient. But Vlad, a Bald Eagle, and former patient here at the Center, arrived on our doorstep!
Vlad was originally sent to our Center in 2019, after getting into a fight with another eagle and was released a few weeks later.
Once in the clinic, Vlad was found to be underweight, and suffering from lead poisoning. Did you know a piece of lead, the size of a grain of rice, can be fatal to a Bald Eagle?
After a few weeks of treatment, Vlad's lead levels dropped to an acceptable amount, and he was ready to move into the Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation Bald Eagle Flight Training Center. We hope to be able to release Vlad again this spring!
_________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Alaska Raptor Center, located in Sitka Alaska, provides medical treatment for over 200 injured bald eagles and other birds each year. Our goal is to release our patients back into the wild; some, however, are injured so severely they could not survive in the wild even after rehabilitation. These birds may join our Raptors-in-Residence, providing excitement and education for more than 80,000 annual visitors and for the 15,000 schoolchildren we reach through the Adopt-a-raptor program and classroom presentations around the country.
