Manufactured for just two years, the 356B Super 90 GT Coupe is among the rarest pushrod-powered variants Porsche ever built—sharing the Carrera GT’s lightweight construction but powered by the high-performance “Super 90” engine. Chassis 110856 is one of approximately 14 factory-built GT coupes and the only known example finished in special-order Condor Yellow (6010). It was completed on April 19, 1960 and delivered that June to J.W. Bootz of Doetinchem, Holland via Pon’s Automobielhandel, Porsche’s first official importer outside Germany.
As Road & Track put it in their 1961 road test, the Super 90 GT was “a Super 90 made extra super for competition purposes.” From the factory, 110856 was configured with the full GT treatment: aluminum doors, hood, and decklid; plexiglass side windows with leather pull straps; 60mm alloy drum brakes; a roll bar; and an 80-liter long-range fuel tank. Additional equipment included a dimmable interior mirror and headlight stone guards—confirmed on both the Kardex and Certificate of Authenticity.
110856 was originally raced in-period by Ben Pon during the 1960 season, with reported class wins and podiums at four Canadian events:
– June 4–5, 1960: St. Eugene, Ontario – 2nd Overall, 2nd in Class
– July 9, 1960: Green Acres, Ontario – 2nd in Class
– July 23, 1960: Harewood Acres, Ontario – 1st in Class
– August 27, 1960: Green Acres, Ontario – 2nd Overall, 2nd in Class
A few years later, Sam Price of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, entered the car in the 1963 and 1964 Pennsylvania Hillclimb Championship. An article from August 1963 described Price’s “bright yellow Super 90” and included a dramatic photo of the car catching air over the crest at Springtown Hill. Original footage from the 1963 and 1964 Hershey Hill Climbs—published by the Antique Automobile Club of America’s Library and Research Center—shows the car in action wearing its original Condor Yellow livery.
Following its early competition history, the car was acquired by James Ball, who retained it through most of the 1980s before passing it to noted Porsche specialist Bill Perrone. Despite a color change to silver, Bill recalls how complete and correct the car was when he owned it. He sold it to Weldon Scrogham, and during this time, it was actively raced in vintage events. Logbooks document entries at Summit Point, Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, and West Palm Beach between 1988 and 1990, with drivers John Biggs and Weldon Scrogham.
Weldon and Cole Scrogham later restored the car for then-owner Charlie Hunter, a process that spanned three years. Traces of the original Condor Yellow were discovered beneath the silver finish, and the car was refinished in its factory color. GT features were retained, including Speedster seats, a louvered rear decklid with integrated air boxes, engraved Plexiglas windows, Carrera 60mm drum brakes with cooling scoops, and a factory roll bar. The interior was re-trimmed by Don Fowlers using NOS materials. Matching “856” stampings—corresponding to the last three digits of the chassis number—are present on the front trunk lid, rear decklid, and airboxes.
Power comes from a replacement Type 616/7 Super 90 engine (no. 800465), built by Jack Staggs and upgraded to 1,720cc with 86mm Nikasil cylinders and pistons. The GT-ratio four-speed gearbox was assembled by Tony Smetona and features taller 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears.
After the restoration, 110856 earned Best in Class at the 1993 Porsche Parade in Cincinnati and was later featured on the cover of Cole Scrogham’s book Porsche 356 Carrera (1996).
Its FIA Historic Technical Passport, valid through 2027, was issued following competition preparation by Tuthill Porsche in the UK.
The car is offered with copies of its Porsche Kardex, Certificate of Authenticity, original sales and delivery paperwork, vintage racing logbook, tool kit, jack, and documentation supporting decades of specialist care.
This is truly a rare, competition-configured Super 90 GT with factory provenance, period race history, and exceptional correct details throughout.
