In US news and current events today, the disability community is fighting to be included in the 2020 election.

Caucuses are different from primary elections because participants must go in person to a caucus site at a specific time and move around inside the site to show what candidate they prefer.

Around 300,000 registered voters in Iowa have some type of disability. After her experience in 2016, Meg Young pushed for caucus accessibility.

To increase caucus accessibility and turnout in 2020, Iowa Dems pushed for a ‘virtual’ caucus system, but it was rejected by the Democratic National Committee. Instead, a satellite caucus system was approved giving Iowans an option to caucus at a location that may be more accessible to them.

The accessible satellite caucus includes child care and a lactation room, as well as quiet rooms for caucus goers It’s also hosted the first ASL exclusive caucus. Even with the satellite caucus reform, many Iowans are still left behind.

+25% of adults in the U.S. have some type of disability. Many 2020 Dems released plans for the disability community. Only +15% of Iowa’s voting-eligible population caucused in 2016 compared to 52% of voters in New Hampshire who voted in the 2016 primary.
