I first encountered “Between Darkness and Light” through the work of Debbie Lou Ludolph, a friend and music colleague at Martin Luther University College in Waterloo, ON.

It is a short one-verse song written down by Palestinian author Manal Hreib in Hebrew and Arabic. Israeli composer Daphna Rosenberg set the text to music and provided an English translation. Transliterations were provided by the Kanata Centre through the work of James vänder Heide (Hebrew) and Rodney Said (Arabic). Debbie Lou taught the song to her community/seminary choir; I was soon captured by its simplicity, beauty, and backstory (including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict).

After trying various SATB and SSA unaccompanied settings of the song, I eventually landed on the version sung here by Legacy Ensemble, which includes a paraphrase of excerpts from Micah 6:6-8 into the introductory and transitional material
