Burichang upazila (Background):

Burichang, also known as Burichong, is an upazila of Comilla District in the Division of Chittagong

The former name of Burichang upazila was North Vijaypur. According to the legend, at the beginning of the eleventh century AD, this northern village of Vijaypur was the abode of many learned men. In the eleventh century, the Chinese fairy Brajak "Yen Sang" came to visit North Vijaypur and was fascinated by the company of the learned men of the area. At that time he called the area "Buddy Chiang". When Buddy translates Chiang's Bengali into Chinese, Buddi means intellect or knowledge or education and Chiang means abode or dormitory or shala etc. Therefore, the lexical meaning of Buddy Chiang is the abode of the wise and the virtuous. Burichang police station was established in 1917 with the establishment of a police outpost in parts of Comillasna Sadar (Kotwali) and parts of the present Brahmanbaria district.

In 1983, Burichang Thana was transformed into a development circle. It was established in 1970 as a full-fledged and independent police station. In 1986, another police station named Brahmanpara was formed with 6 unions of this police station. With the remaining 6 unions, Burichang Thana emerged as a standardized thana or upazila on 15/04/1983. Burichang Upazila is bounded on the north by brahmanpara upazila, on the south by comilla adarsha sadar upazila, on the east by tripura, on the west, chandina upazila and devidwar upazila.

In 1983, Burichang Thana with 15 unions was transformed into a development circle. It was established in 1970 as a full-fledged and independent police station. In 1986, another police station named Brahmanpara was formed with 6 unions of this police station. With the remaining 6 unions, Burichang Thana made its debut as an upazila on 15/04/1983.

Varella Union was divided into two in 2016 through elections, then the two unions were renamed North Varella Union and South Varella Union. At present there are 9 unions in Burichang upazila.

বুড়িচং উপজেলা (পটভূমি):

বুড়িচং কুমিল্লা জেলার একটি উপজেলা। বুড়িচং উপজেলার পূর্বনাম ছিল উত্তর বিজয়পুর। কিংবদমত্মী অনুসারে খৃষ্টীয় একাদশ শতকের গোড়ার দিকে এই উত্তর বিজয়পুর গ্রামে বহু জ্ঞানী -গুনীর আবাসস্থল ছিল। একাদশ শতকের দিকে চৈনিক পরি ব্রাজক ‘‘ইয়েন সাং’’ উত্তর বিজয়পুর পরিদর্শণ করতে আসেন এবং এলাকার জ্ঞানী-গুনীদের  সাহচর্যে মুগ্ধ হন। ঐ সময় এ এলাকাকে ‘‘বুড্ডি চিয়াং’’ নামে অভিহিত করেন। চৈনিক ভাষায় বুড্ডি চিয়াং এর বাংলা অনুবাদ করলে বুড্ডি অর্থ বুদ্ধি বা জ্ঞানী বা শিক্ষা এবং চিয়াং অর্থ আবাসস্থল বা আস্তানা বা শালা ইত্যাদি বুঝায়। তাই বুড্ডি চিয়াং এর আভিধানিক অর্থ দাড়ায় জ্ঞানী ও গুনীর আবাসস্থল, উক্ত বুড্ডি চিয়াং নাম হতে কালক্রমে মানুষের মুখের ভাষায় সহজ বলার তাগিদে বুড্ডি চং ও পরে বুড়িচং নামের উৎপত্তি হয়। কুমিলস্না সদর (কোতয়ালী) এর কিছু অংশ ও বর্তমান ব্রাহ্মণবাড়ীয়ার জেলার কিছু অংশ নিয়ে ১৯১৬ সালে একটি পুলিশ ফাঁড়ি স্থাপনের মাধ্যমে বুড়িচং থানার গোড়াপত্তন হয়।

বুড়িচং থানা ১৯৬৩ সালে একটি উন্নয়ন সার্কেল-এ রূপান্তরিত হয়। ১৯৭০ সালে এটি একটি পূর্ণাঙ্গ ও স্বতন্ত্র থানা হিসাবে প্রতিষ্ঠা পায়। ১৯৭৮ সালে এই থানার ৭টি ইউনিয়ন নিয়ে ব্রাহ্মণপাড়া নামে অপর একটি থানার সৃষ্টি হয়। অবশিষ্ট ৮টি ইউনিয়ন নিয়ে ১৫/০৪/১৯৮৩ সালে বুড়িচং থানা একটি মানোন্নীত থানা বা উপজেলা হিসাবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করে। বুড়িচং উপজেলার উত্তরে ব্রাহ্মণপাড়া উপজেলা, দক্ষিণে কুমিল্লা আদর্শ সদর উপজেলা, পূর্বে ভারতের ত্রিপুরা, পশ্চিমে চান্দিনা উপজেলা ও দেবিদ্বার উপজেলা অবস্থিত।

নির্বাচনের মাধ্যমে ২০১৬ সালে ভারেল্লা ইউনিয়ন দুইভাগ হয়, তখন ইউনিয়ন দুইটিকে- উত্তর ভারেল্লা ইউনিয়ন এবং দক্ষিণ ভারেল্লা ইউনিয়ন নামকরণ করা হয়। বর্তমানে বুড়িচং উপজেলায় ৯টি ইউনিয়ন আছে।
