Over 6.8% of Californian residents under the age of 65 suffer from some form of disability, according to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
So, what are the benefits of having a disabled parking permit in California?
Aside from being able to park in the standard designated handicap parking spaces, you can also park:
For free at metered parking spaces
In green curb spaces with no time limit
In areas designated for residents or merchants
The qualifying conditions for a disabled parking permit in California include:
Severe lack of mobility due to a disorder or disease
Low vision or blindness
Significant restrictions caused by lung disease
Loss of use of one or both hands and/or legs
An inability to move without the assistance of a cane, walker or other mobility aid
You can apply for a disabled parking permit in person, by visiting a California Department of Motor Vehicles Office, or by mail, using the Application for Disabled Person Placard or Plates form (REG 195), which you can find online.
To apply, you will need:
A medical certification by a licensed physician detailing your disability
Payment for the placards, if applicable (permanent and travel placards are free, however, temporary placards are $6).
Disabled licence plates are also free but will incur some vehicle registration fees.
Anything else you need to know?
A handicap placard must be displayed on your rearview mirror when parked at a handicap sign and removed when the vehicle is in motion.
Any violations or abuse of the handicap parking laws and privileges could result in fines, civil penalties or imprisonment.
