The spotlight on Canada's affordable housing crisis intensifies as rent hikes, dwindling rental units, and urban encampments grab public attention. Athabasca University sociologist Dr. Katie MacDonald’s research focuses on the experiences of people working in the affordable housing sector. Workers are experiencing moral suffering because their jobs often involve saying no to people in need of affordable housing. MacDonald says more public infrastructure and housing justice is needed to shift thinking so that housing isn’t just a commodity, but a human right.
