Motorbikes or car windows are not how you should be experiencing the unparalleled landscapes and purple mountains of Ladakh. There’s just something about the motion of the pedals that I love very much and this place takes it to a whole new level.
It takes 5 passes all above 4000 meters, going up to 5328 meters and 13,000 meters of elevation gain (crossing these passes) just to get to Leh and then there’s the added pleasure of climbing Khardung La where roads are practically non-existent for the last 7 kilometers. I’m not saying it’s incredibly hard because it’s not. I still think cycling is easier than hiking and it is almost a joy ride if you have decent fitness and a love for finding yourself here in these mountains without another living soul in sight.
