Composed by Ernesto Lecuona, who also composed the Breeze and I, this beautiful number somehow managed to avoid the Shadows and was popularised by the Dutch Band ZZ en de Maskers, whose lead guitarist was Jan de Hont. I first came across this number in 1985 when I was working for a large Dutch company in the middle east. The Dutch guys had formed a band and needed a second guitarist, cue Youngy! Needles to say La Comparsa was on our set list.
La comparsa means, I believe, something like a carnival procession.
Geeks, Nerds and Anoraks corner.
An excellent opportunity to use the Burns Anniversary Marvin so I tried the middle pickup, but something seemed not quite right, so I then tried the bridge pup, having discounted pickup combinations for the raw sound I was after. The Marvin bridge pup is noticeably sharper than the bridge pup on the Strat so it needed filling out a little, especially on the top strings, hence the use of the Boss GE7 Equaliser. But might I just as well have twanged-up the middle pup on the Marvin to achieve a similar result??? My Marvin is fitted with 12-52 gauge Elixir strings.
I used the ever-faithful Wonderful Land patch no 16 on the Hall and Collins echo unit straight into the Tascam DP24 with nothing added and flat EQs.
The backing track is by the late and much lamented Goran Tangring.
