Fredrikson explains why the Arctic has become one of the most strategically important regions in the world. Russia’s military presence is expanding, China has long-term ambitions in the High North, and NATO is strengthening its footprint across the region. She says Svalbard faces no immediate military threat, but hybrid activity – including propaganda and symbolic presence such as Russian monuments and churches – is increasing. At the same time, Norway is dramatically boosting defense spending, with tens of billions of euros being invested to protect its Arctic territory.
