The Lead Sled | What Happens When You Add Weight to an RC Airplane?
This is a repost because many people keep asking me what happens when we modify a standard RC plane, and make it a pig, way overweight, and with a high wing load. So, here is a video where I address those questions.
Please HYPE my videos, folks, it helps me grow the channel!
This is not a video of its flight, which will come soon. But how I got to where I did.
In this video, I take my Avanti S jet and turn it into what I call “The Lead Sled”, an experimental RC project where I added over a pound of extra weight just to see how it would affect flight performance. With over 7 lbs total weight (originally 5.6 pounds), 41+ oz wing loading, and a cube wing loading of 24, this airplane is way beyond normal limits.
I share the full story of why I did it, how I modified the airframe, added bigger stall fences, changed paint and visibility, and then put it through 15+ test flights to study how heavy RC airplanes behave. You’ll see why wing loading matters, how stall fences and flaps change flight characteristics, and whether an overweight RC jet can still fly beautifully.
If you’re into RC jets, giant scale planes, experimental RC builds, or just love learning about aerodynamics and flight testing, this video is packed with lessons for builders and pilots of all levels.
Watch to see if “The Lead Sled” really flies—and what you can learn from pushing an RC plane to its limits.
Just a note: Some of the numbers I share in the video are off a bit; the info below is accurate.
