When SpaceX launched rockets both late at night and early in the morning this week, they produced a "jellyfish" effect seen in the night sky. The effect is caused as the rockets climb through the atmosphere to a point where they are illuminated by either the setting or rising sun. The effect is best seen as when it is still dark at the surface. SpaceX launches like these can produce this effect over the Carolinas and the East Coast when they launch north and east from Cape Canaveral in Florida. On a smaller scale, launches from the NASA facillity on Wallops Island in Virginia can also produce this effect for the Southeast.
