Why did the U.S. Army cancel the RAH-66 Comanche after spending billions and building flying prototypes? The answer is timing. The Comanche was designed as a stealth reconnaissance helicopter for Cold War–style battlefields. But during its long development, armed drones emerged. UAVs like the Predator could fly higher, see farther, loiter for hours, cover vastly more terrain, and strike targets without risking pilots. The Comanche also overlapped roles already filled by Apache attack helicopters and Cobra gunships. In the end, drones replaced the mission more effectively and at lower cost—making the Comanche a solution to a problem that no longer existed.
