Farm vehicles must comply with some of the regulations for commercial vehicles, but not all of them.

Key requirements in common:

• Checking brake operation
• Checking tires
• Ensuring vehicle is in good operational order
• Setting out flares and warning signs if vehicle stalls on the roadway

Many states exempt agricultural transportation vehicles or offer a waiver from more stringent commercial vehicle requirements. For example, states may issue a restricted commercial driver’s license (CDL) for operators of farm vehicles that allows those drivers to forgo hazmat training that other CDL drivers must complete.

How do farm vehicle operators qualify for exemptions or waivers from strict CDL?
• Vehicle must be controlled and operated by a farmer, employees, or family members
• Vehicle must be used to transport either agricultural products, farm machinery, farm supplies, or both to and from a farm
• Vehicle must not be used in the operations of a for-hire motor carrier, and
• Vehicle must be used only within 150 miles of farmer’s farm

Another key difference in regulations for commercial vehicles and farm vehicles is required insurance.

Commercial motor vehicles operated by motor carriers must have $1 million coverage. Farm vehicles don’t have that requirement.
