Perched atop a 12-metre-high cliff, Tulum was a walled Maya city that served as a major port for the nearby city of Cobá. Located along the stunning Caribbean coastline on the eastern edge of the Yucatán Peninsula, in Quintana Roo, Mexico, Tulum's strategic position made it a vital hub for trade and commerce.
The site was inhabited as early as the 6th century, with its success attributed to its access to both sea and land routes. Tulum thrived as a trading centre, acting as a key distribution hub for local and foreign goods transported via sea, river, and land.
One of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya, Tulum reached its peak between the 13th and 15th centuries. Remarkably, it managed to endure for about 70 years after the Spanish conquest, standing as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the Maya civilisation.
