The Mercedes 170 V W136 was the brand's most popular model in the pre-war period. Unveiled at the International Automobile and Motorcycle Exhibition in Berlin in February 1936, it replaced the 170. With the same engine capacity of 1.7 liters, it was more powerful, more modern, and more affordable than its predecessor. Combined with a simple and reliable design, this translated into an enormous success for the model. By 1942, 70,000 units had been sold, and when the war ended, the 170 V model became the basis for new production. In 1946, they started with ambulances, production of the 4-door limousine resumed in July 1947, and by early 1949 the 170 V was the only passenger car model in the Mercedes-Benz range. The example shown here is a 170 Va, that is, after modernization changes made in 1950. Among these was the addition of easy access to the luggage compartment (through the tailgate), increased seating and interior width of the passenger compartment, and improved suspension and brakes.
