The Lupron® Trigger (Leuprolide Trigger) is a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection of Leuprolide Acetate that is taken during IVF to induce the final maturation of the eggs prior to egg retrieval. It is typically administered approximately 36 hours prior to egg retrieval to produce a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) that mimics the natural surge of LH that the body experiences during ovulation. The Lupron® Trigger is prescribed as an alternative to triggering with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) because it is less likely to cause a serious side effect called Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). Do not confuse the Lupron® Trigger with the Lupron®14 Day Kit. While both products contain the same medication, their respective uses are very different.
The Lupron® Trigger is a sterile compound that comes in a prefilled syringe or a prefilled vial. The ready-to-use prefilled syringe contains 4mg/0.8 mL and requires no mixing or drawing up of medication. The prefilled vial comes in two preparations containing 4 mg/0.8 mL or 5 mg/mL which must be drawn up with a syringe before injection.
