The altar is preserved inside a luminous modern structure designed by Richard Meier, blending antiquity with contemporary architecture.
From here, the walk continues into the restored Piazza Augusto Imperatore, where the newly reopened space reveals a striking dialogue between:
• the Mausoleum of Augustus, the emperor’s gigantic circular tomb (currently not visitable, with reopening scheduled for 2026),
• Fascist-era monumental buildings from the 1930s,
• a beautiful small fountain created in 1774
• and fragments of ancient Rome integrated into the urban landscape.
The contrast makes this square one of the most fascinating urban spaces in Rome — a layered encounter between imperial ambition, modern monumentalism, and archaeological memory.
The route then follows Via dei Pontefici, Via del Corso, and the quiet Vicolo del Grottino, before returning to the Ara Pacis to complete the loop.
