In this short video, we show footage of James, one of our cultural artisans in Ghana, as he fine tunes a gyil (JEE-lee) , which is similar to a xylophone, marimba, or balafon. The gyil is made with smoked hardwood keys fixed to a wood and bamboo frame with calabash gourds positioned under the keys to amplify and tune the sound. When you purchase an Africa Heartwood Project instrument you are making a difference in the lives of African cultural artisans and their families. You will also have a quality instrument to enjoy with your friends and family.
