Daycare Vouchers Meeting

Описание: Hundreds of families across the mountains are watching the action in Washington D.C. closely because without progress hey say their preschool and daycare programs may have to shut down.This morning, parents and daycare workers told leaders in Henderson County the government shutdown will end federal funding for the daycare voucher program.Parents say the program supports children of working parents, and if it shuts down, some parents would have to make other arrangements for childcare or quit work.Families receive the federal help based on income, and parents must work or attend school to qualify. One preschool director told us county officials said if they were to pick up all the federal programs affected by the shutdown, the county would have to increase property taxes 20-percent.They're saying they need help regardless of whether the congress comes up with an agreement.Katherine Montgomery, preschool director, even if they reach a resolution today, the affects of this are going to be weeks and weeks past, we may not receive funding for a month, during that month, many centers may close.County commissioners plan to send a resolution to members of the house and senate but that's all the help they could offer at this morning's meeting.Several of the fath-based daycare providers told us they would be able to continue offering their services to families but that their funds are also limited.By Sherrill BarberRelated LinksHenderson County Voucher Threat
