🔥 Sand Casting Aluminum + Testing Graphite Powder as Parting Dust! 🔥
In this metal‑casting session, I’m pouring molten aluminum into a petrobond‑sand mold—but with a twist. Instead of using traditional parting powder, I’m will be using graphite powder to see how it performs when rubbed onto the pattern's surfaces.
You’ll see the full process from prepping the sand, packing the flask, applying the graphite, and finally pouring the aluminum. I’ll walk through what worked, what didn’t, and whether graphite is actually a better option for clean mold separation and surface finish.
If you’re into DIY casting, backyard foundry projects, or just love watching molten metal take shape, this one’s for you. Stay around to see the results and decide if graphite powder earns a spot in your casting toolkit.
👍 Like, subscribe, and drop a comment if you’ve tried graphite—or if you have another parting agent I should test next!
*In the video I mentioned car bondo. I meant to say spotting putty.
To clarifiy, when the sand mold is slightly tipped with the sprue at the lowest point allowing the aluminum to fill towards the risers.
Casting sand used is 190mesh Teton-bond petrobond
Aluminum used is scrap aluminum car parts. This type of aluminum has a high silicon content and works well for reuse in casting.
The 12kg furnace used was sent to me as a sponsorship by Vevor. Check out my video for reviewing and using the Vevor furnace.
