Removing the press wheels from the shafts so we can change the bar spacing from 7.2" to 9"
Mid 1990's bar so the packers are well and truly rusted, tried the usual sledge hammer, heating, jacks, wrenches etc without much success.
Took about 5 days to make the 50 ton press
Ended up taking about 6-7 days to pull apart 45 press wheels
50 ton will break the welds holding the spindle/tube to the packer wheel hub so we reinforced the welds were we where pressing with high tensile welding rods
Only thing I would do differently would be to not bother trying to salvage any of the shafts and just cut them off after removing a couple packers, the shaft starts to bend after you have removed to many packers and then the packer will bind up.
