As the Chief Executive Officer of the National Emergencies Trust, Mhairi Sharp heads up an organisation that responds in the immediate aftermath of disaster. She talks to Catherine Levin about how it's possible within four hours of an incident occurring to muster the resources required to set up a national fundraising appeal that can, as it did during Covid, lead to as much as £100m in donations.
That's a tough job and she describes how an appeal must build on people's propensity to give as well answering the vital question: is it the right thing to do? With a firm focus on survivors, she tells Catherine about how monies reach those most in need and how those survivors have in turn informed practice for helping those who may be survivors in the future.
It's a fascinating conversation about how the voluntary, faith and community sector intersects with the emergency services when people may be in their darkest hour.
