EPISODE DETAILS:

We woke up to a tripped electrical system and no hot water. The RCD kept throwing out, even after unplugging everything we could isolate. With the battery charger ruled out, the only hardwired suspect left was the Quick B3 40L boiler.

Disconnecting the neutral confirmed the immersion element had developed an earth leak. So began the job.

What followed was draining the tank (more times than expected), removing the element in a very tight engine bay space, discovering serious calcium build-up inside the tank, and finding the sacrificial anode completely gone after just two years. There was also the usual battle with seals, O-rings and over-tightening that only reveals itself after you’ve pressurised the system again.

The Quick B3 unit also functions as a heat exchanger from the engine coolant system, so internal scale and corrosion can build up faster than you’d think, especially in hard-water areas.

Christmas without hot water wasn’t ideal. But at least the electrics stopped tripping!
