The Dungeshwari caves are where the Prince Siddhartha performed austerities for six years before he attained enlightenment. After six years of austerities the Siddhartha Bodhisattva realized that these extreme austerities are not the path for enlightenment and only through the middle way one could attain enlightenment. Choosing the middle way, he put an end to his 6 years of austerities. He then carried on with his journey and reached Bodhgaya where he finally attained enlightenment.
